ABOUT THE CITY OF ARLON

The town of Arlon is situated in Wallonia and is the capital of the Belgian province of Luxembourg; it is a major commercial and administrative centre in the region. It is also the capital of its judicial district. Furthermore, it is the most populous town in what is known as the Pays d’Arlon. The town lies 185 kilometres south-east of Brussels, on the European rail network and the Brussels–Luxembourg–Strasbourg road network. The municipality forms part of Belgian Lorraine, the only geological region in Belgium dating from the Jurassic period (Mesozoic Era).

Arlon is home to numerous professional photographers, and the region offers many opportunities to capture striking images. 

The municipality is situated at the junction of the following catchment areas:

• the Meuse to the west and south, with:

  • the Semois, which rises in the city centre and flows westwards through Belgian Lorraine and the province before joining the Meuse shortly after entering France;

  • the Messancy, which rises in the south of the municipality and flows into the Chiers at Athus further south;

• that of the Rhine, with the Eisch serving as the border with Luxembourg at Clairefontaine and collecting the waters of the streams in the eastern part of the municipality.
