ABOUT THE TOWN OF BINCHE

The town of Binche is home to numerous talented photographers, and there are many opportunities to capture striking images there.

Binche is a French-speaking town in Belgium, situated in the Walloon Region in the province of Hainaut.

Situated on the route between Mons and Charleroi, the town is best known for its carnival and its architectural heritage.

Binche Carnival is one of the oldest carnivals in Belgium. In 2003, UNESCO recognised it as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. It has been listed among the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation since 2004 and was awarded the rank of Officer of the Walloon Order of Merit on 23 February 2017.
The origins of this carnival date back to 1394, and it was an opportunity to let off steam and release any frustrations that might have been felt during Lent. It was, therefore, a festival that allowed for all manner of excesses before a period of deprivation. The main characters of the Binche Carnival, the Gilles, first appeared in 1795. There are around 1,000 Gilles.
The programme for the three days leading up to Ash Wednesday is precise in Binche. On the Sunday before Shrove Tuesday, the revellers take to the streets from 9 am to the sound of violas and drums. They parade through the town in the afternoon, dancing until dawn. Monday is reserved for young people. At 10:00, the Catholic, Socialist and Liberal youth groups and the fancy-dress societies parade through the streets and engage in confetti battles. At 16:00, a ‘rondeau de l’amitié’ (friendship dance) takes place on the Grand-Place, before the fireworks display at 19:00 on Place Eugène-Derbaix. Finally, Tuesday is the most important day. At dawn the Gilles gather for breakfast of oysters and champagne. Dressed in their costumes, they proceed to the Town Hall to receive medals before setting off in procession towards the Grand-Place to watch the fireworks and the Grand-Place being set alight from 9.30 pm.

Furthermore, Binche is also renowned for its history and architectural monuments. Indeed, the Binche Belfry is itself recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and forms an integral part of the town hall, which was built in the 14th century. The monument was rebuilt in the Renaissance style by the architect Du Broeucq following the sacking of the town by French armies in 1554. Following a major restoration completed in 1901, the town hall regained its Renaissance appearance. A Baroque dome crowns the belfry, which houses a carillon, several of whose bells date back to the 16th century. The coats of arms of Charles V and his sister Mary of Hungary adorn the building.
