ABOUT THE CITY OF CHARLEROI
The city of Charleroi is home to countless talented photographers, and the opportunities for beautiful images are legion.
Charleroi is a French-speaking city in Belgium and the social capital of Wallonia. It is located in the province of Hainaut on the river Sambre.
Charleroi is best known for its international airport, the 2nd largest in the country, and the largest in the Walloon Region in terms of passenger traffic. It is mainly used by low-cost airlines, notably Ryanair, and light aviation.
Mobility is of paramount importance in this city. The Rive Gauche project, which began in 2013, is primarily concerned with revitalizing the lower town, and is introducing facilities that will benefit pedestrians by enabling them to stroll freely in the town center or along the Sambre. The "placerelle", a user-friendly bridge over the Sambre, links the right and left banks, leading either to Charleroi-Sud station or to the town center. Also ideal for strollers, it is now possible to walk along the left bank, which has been redeveloped as a relaxation area. In the city center, the Place Verte has also been transformed from a parking lot into a welcoming square in front of a shopping mall. Cars will be kept off Boulevard Tirou, allowing pedestrians to shop without constraint. Underground access ramps will allow vehicles to park underground.
In 2008, Charleroi entered a phase of transition. The aim of this phase is to breathe new life into the city center, which had been gradually dying out. The city is undertaking major urban development projects to boost its appeal. This drive for economic, environmental and urban regeneration is supported by a number of major projects, including the Phénix project, which focuses on the lower town.
But the city is full of other treasures. On the central Place Charles II, you'll find an Art Deco town hall with a belfry whose bells chime a few bars of popular Belgian songs. Also located on this square is the Saint-Christophe church, renowned for its choir housing a large gold-leaf mosaic. The nearby Musée des Beaux-Arts focuses mainly on Belgian painters of the 19th and 20th centuries, and includes a sizeable René Magritte collection.
In addition to its urban centers, Charleroi is rich in architectural heritage and natural sites. The thousand and one facets of the city of Charleroi promise every visitor a tailor-made tour. Not forgetting the festive life that keeps the city lively with its Carnival, the brocante des quais, the Christmas village and the Fêtes de Wallonie.
Charleroi is a multi-faceted city, perfect for unique photo opportunities.
