ABOUT THE CITY OF CHARLEROI

The city of Charleroi is home to numerous talented photographers, and there are many opportunities to capture striking images there.

Charleroi is a French-speaking city in Belgium and the administrative capital of Wallonia. It is situated in the province of Hainaut on the River Sambre.

Charleroi is best known for its international airport, the second largest in the country and the busiest in the Walloon Region in terms of passenger traffic. It is mainly used by low-cost airlines, notably Ryanair, and for general aviation.

Mobility is a key priority in the city. The Rive Gauche project, launched in 2013, focuses on regenerating the Lower Town and introducing facilities that benefit pedestrians, enabling them to walk freely through the city centre or along the River Sambre. The ‘placerelle’, a pedestrian-friendly bridge spanning the River Sambre, connects the right bank to the left bank, leading either towards Charleroi-Sud station or towards the city centre. Walkers can also enjoy the redeveloped left bank, which has been transformed into a leisure area. In the city centre, Place Verte has also been transformed: once a car park, it is now a welcoming square in front of a shopping centre. As a result, cars will no longer be allowed on Boulevard Tirou, giving pedestrians unobstructed access to shops. Underground access ramps will direct vehicles to the basement car park. 

Since 2008, Charleroi has been undergoing a period of transition. The aim of this phase is to breathe new life into the city centre, which had been gradually declining. The City is undertaking major urban regeneration works with a view to enhancing its appeal. This drive towards economic, environmental and urban regeneration is supported by major projects, including the Phénix project, which focuses primarily on the Lower Town.

The city also offers many other attractions. On central Place Charles II you will find an Art Deco town hall with a belfry whose carillon plays a few bars of popular Belgian songs. Also on this square stands the Church of Saint Christopher, renowned for its choir, which houses a large gold-leaf mosaic. The Museum of Fine Arts is nearby and focuses mainly on Belgian painters of the 19th and 20th centuries, and includes a relatively extensive collection of works by René Magritte.

In addition to its urban centres, Charleroi offers a rich architectural heritage complemented by natural sites. The city’s many facets promise every visitor a tailored experience. Its vibrant social calendar brings the city to life through its Carnival, the quayside flea market, the Christmas village and the Fêtes de Wallonie.
