ABOUT THE TOWN OF CHIEVRES

The town of Chièvres is home to numerous talented photographers, and it offers many opportunities to capture striking images. It is situated in the Walloon Region, in the province of Hainaut.

Chièvres, more commonly known as the ‘City of Aviators’, offers a rich cultural and historical heritage. With a rich medieval history, the town centre reveals its finest buildings: the Chapel of St John the Baptist, St Martin’s Church, the Gavre Tower and its ramparts, the ‘ladrerie’ and Egmont Castle, amongst others…  

This small town in Hainaut, situated 25 km from Mons, is well worth a visit. Its traditional ‘ducasses’ and ‘crossage al’ tonne’ events attract several thousand people every year and are also well worth a visit.

Chièvres also boasts a rich military heritage. It is home to an air base, the Air Base Museum and the Hunter, an aeroplane that has become a symbol of the town. This aircraft, known as the Hunter, was flown by Colonel Bob Corbeel. These Hunters, legendary aircraft in the town’s history, were the ones that soared through the Belgian skies from June 1956 to September 1963.
The aircraft can now be admired at the junction of the ‘Chasse Royale’, a roundabout that improves road safety and facilitates smooth traffic flow. It stands at the city entrance as a lasting symbol of its heritage.
