Huy is a French-speaking town in Belgium, located in the Walloon region, and the administrative center of the Liège province.
Huy is situated on the Meuse at its confluence with the Hoyoux, halfway between Namur and Liège. The inhabitants of Huy are called Hutois.
The commune of Huy stretches along the right bank and southern slope of the Meuse, which forms the municipal boundary, with the exception of the urban districts of Entre-Deux-Portes, Saint-Pierre, Mont Falise and Statte on the left bank.
The majority of the commune is part of the Sambre-et-Meuse furrow and the Ardenne Condrusienne, a wooded sub-region of the Condroz. Huy lies at the confluence of the Hoyoux and Meuse rivers.
Huy's history dates back thousands of years. Its reputation is based firstly on its craftsmanship, then on its industrial and commercial know-how. Proud of its past and aware of its present, it is planning its future. Huy is one of the country's oldest cities. The primitive town, certainly in Roman times, grew up around the castrum on the right bank. Legend has it that in the early 2nd century AD, at the foot of the rock, Saint Materne dedicated a sanctuary to the Virgin Mary, the forerunner of our collegiate church.
