La Louvière is a French-speaking town in Belgium, situated in the Walloon Region in the province of Hainaut.

The town of La Louvière was established following its separation from the municipality of Saint-Vaast, officially enacted by the Act of 10 April 1869. La Louvière is a product of the Industrial Revolution; indeed, it was the development of heavy industry (particularly the steel industry) that led to its expansion and its establishment as a separate municipality.

La Louvière is situated 50 km south of the capital, Brussels; approximately 260 km north-east of Paris; 90 km east of Lille; approximately 160 km west of Aachen; 20 km east of Mons; and 30 km north-west of Charleroi. La Louvière lies at the centre of a European motorway junction, notably involving the E19 (Amsterdam–Antwerp–Brussels–Paris) and the E42 (Lille–Charleroi–Liège–Frankfurt am Main).

Since the merger of the municipalities, La Louvière has comprised the local authorities of Boussoit, Haine-Saint-Paul, Haine-Saint-Pierre, Houdeng-Aimeries, Houdeng-Gœgnies, Maurage, Saint-Vaast, Strépy-Bracquegnies, Trivières, La Louvière and part of the former municipality of Familleureux, including the hamlet of Besonrieux.

A journey around the world through industrial heritage allows us to recognise the Bois-du-Luc mining site as one of the most significant milestones of the industrial era.
Like other sites inscribed on the World Heritage List, Bois-du-Luc offers us an insight into the industrial era, workers’ living conditions, social struggles, employer-worker relations, the transformation of a rural environment into an industrial landscape, and the cultural mixing brought about by the mine. These are also sites that challenge us. Some find fragments of answers to questions about the place of work in society (without work?), about our rebellious streak, about the (invisible) forms of surveillance, about our relationship with immigrants and exile… It is in this context that we must recognise the universal value of Bois-du-Luc.

Bois-du-Luc, together with Blegny-Mine, Bois du Cazier and Grand-Hornu, are four mining sites in Wallonia that were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List at the 36th session held in Saint Petersburg in July 2012.
