ABOUT THE MUNICIPALITY OF LEUZE-EN-HAINAUT
Leuze-en-Hainaut is home to numerous skilled photographers, and the area offers many opportunities to capture striking images.
The municipality is situated in the Walloon Region, in the province of Hainaut.
Leuze-en-Hainaut originated around a monastery dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul in the mid-7th century, during the time of Saint Amand. It was a royal fief that Emperor Charlemagne granted in 802 to Ludger, the first Bishop of Münster. It is mentioned in the deed of partition of the Kingdom of Lotharingia in 870 between Charles the Bald, King of France, and Louis, King of Germany; the town fell to Charles. Leuze was situated in the charcoal-burning forest and formed part of the former Burbant.
It was following the amalgamation of the municipalities in January 1977 that Leuze took the name Leuze-en-Hainaut.
Leuze-en-Hainaut has a rich folklore tradition; there you can see:
– The King’s Dance, which takes place on the last Monday in June. A distinctly local tradition, Thieulain’s ‘King’s Dance’ has been held continuously since at least 1590, with the exception of periods of war.
– Les Rois brouzés: every year on 6 January, the ‘Rois Brouzés’ festival takes place, which forms part of our Leuze folklore.
All the children in the town are invited to dress up and visit the houses, where they will receive a coin after singing the traditional song.
– Leuze-en-Floralie: each year on 1 May, at the crack of dawn, florists, nursery owners and horticulturists take over the Grand-Place and the Place du Jeu de Balle to lay out a carpet of flowers, plants and shrubs of all kinds and in every colour. The exhibition and sale attracts many visitors, from gardening enthusiasts confident they will find quality products to casual passers-by delighted by the diversity of the displays.
In addition to its many picturesque narrow streets and distinctive atmosphere, Leuze-en-Hainaut offers numerous green spaces and attractive walks. The town provides a suitable setting for distinctive photo shoots that showcase your company, organisation or institution.
Leuze-en-Hainaut is a town well worth exploring – a multifaceted place that is perfect for photography.
