ABOUT THE CITY OF MONS
The city of Mons is home to countless talented photographers, and opportunities for beautiful images abound.
Mons is a French-speaking town in Belgium's Walloon region. Former capital of the Counts of Hainaut, capital of the province of Hainaut, principal town of the Mons district, it is the seat of one of the country's five appeal courts. Steeped in history and boasting a rich architectural and cultural heritage, Mons has been the cultural capital of Wallonia since 2002. On February 9, 2010, Mons was also designated European Capital of Culture for 2015.
Mons is rich in history and can be discovered through its built heritage and streets that bear witness to urban construction. The Grand-Place illustrates the evolution of architecture from the 15th to the 21st century. It offers a magnificent architectural panorama from the 15th century to the present day, with most of its facades listed. At its center, a 12-meter-diameter ring symbolizes the 19 communes of Mons, as well as the arena for the battle between Saint-Georges and the Dragon, which takes place every Trinity Sunday. the distinctive, single-storey Hôtel de Ville. It's a Gothic pearl topped by an elegant Baroque campanile. The façade features the Grand-Garde Monkey, which brings good luck to those who stroke it with their left hand. To the rear, the Jardin du Mayeur, a haven of peace, is home to the statue of the Ropieur, much appreciated by the people of Mons.
But don't forget the Jardin du Mayeur via the Rue d'Enghien, the Passage Victor Hugo and the Ruelle César.
Mons' oldest monument is located in the Parc du Château, where the Chapelle Saint-Calixte and the 87-metre-high Baroque Belfry are recognized as Unesco World Heritage Sites.
The pedestrian zone, with its typical alleyways and adjacent streets, offers a wealth of stores for a pleasant return to the Grand-Place.
Mons also boasts a wealth of green spaces and must-see walks. Ideal for unique photo shoots that put your company, organization or institution in the spotlight. The people of Mons will welcome you with a smile and generosity!
