ABOUT ROCHEFORT

The town of Rochefort is home to numerous talented photographers, and there are many opportunities to capture striking images there.

Rochefort is a French-speaking town in Belgium, situated in the Walloon Region in the province of Namur, on the borders of the Famenne, Calestienne and Ardennes regions. Flanked by the River Lomme, it lies 105 km south of Brussels.
It is the administrative centre of a judicial canton (the judicial district of Dinant within the jurisdiction of the Court of Appeal of Liège) and, as such, is the seat of a magistrates’ court.
The city is particularly well known for its Trappist beer and its castle.

Rochefort describes itself as a town of art, traditions and hospitality; our town cultivates the authenticity of a harmonious medium-sized town. Rochefort benefits from the vitality, wide open horizons and vast beaches of the nearby ocean.

Rochefort and its surroundings have long been a favourite subject for many writers, but over the past sixty years or so, there has been a proliferation of books, journals, articles and monographs. Alongside a few essential works, the tireless efforts of two groups of researchers deserve special mention.
Since 1975, *Entre Ardenne et Meuse*, 17 Rue du Chenet, 6870 Saint-Hubert, has published 50 issues of remarkable quality. In 2019, the collection concluded with issue number 50. As you will see in the list below, the contributors to the magazine *De la Meuse à l’Ardenne* have covered numerous topics relating to the Grand Rochefort region.

In Rochefort, the pioneer was undoubtedly Father Albert Van Iterson. He was one of the founding members of the Cercle Culturel et Historique de Rochefort in 1959. The Cercle worked closely with him until his death in 1982. A highly prolific writer, Father Albert published over 50 articles and monographs. The Cercle has continued in his footsteps. Its objective, as set out in one of the articles of association of its non-profit organisation, is to promote the cultural development of Rochefort, in particular the study of the town’s past and that of the former county of the same name, as well as the wider region, with a view to raising awareness of the past and preserving and showcasing its historical artefacts: monuments, sites and documents. This approach aligns with the credo that Father Albert bequeathed to his team: ‘When writing a historical study, one does not invent the facts.
