ABOUT THE TOWN OF SAINT-HUBERT

The town of Saint-Hubert is home to numerous professional photographers, and it offers many opportunities to capture striking images. 

Saint-Hubert is a French-speaking town in Belgium, located in the Walloon Region within the province of Luxembourg.

The site, which was already occupied by the Gallo-Romans, began to develop from the early Middle Ages onwards, thanks to the first clerics settled there by Pepin II, followed by the Benedictines, their internal and external schools, and pilgrimages from the Ardennes, Famenne, Lothier and the Rhineland, and later by the regional market and fairs that sustained the growing town until modern times.
Having enjoyed municipal freedoms, jurisdictions and rights from a very early stage, the town retained its town hall and its jurisdictions until the French occupation during the Revolution.

Saint-Hubert has held the title of ‘European Capital of Hunting and Nature’ since 1991. It is still sometimes referred to, as in days gone by, as ‘Rome of the Ardennes’, in reference to the international influence of its abbey over 11 centuries — with its eight priories and two colleges of canons, its renowned monastic schools, its Theresian College, its 130 parishes under the prelate’s jurisdiction, its religious buildings such as the Basilica of Saint-Hubert, the former Abbey Church of Saint-Pierre or Saint-Hubert Abbey, its status as an international sanctuary, a major pilgrimage destination in Western Europe since around the year 850 — and to the openly sovereign policies of the prelates, who were staunch, outspoken and proselytising Roman Catholics, claiming to be answerable only to Rome and the emperor.

In addition to its characteristic narrow streets and distinctive atmosphere, Saint-Hubert offers numerous green spaces and attractive walks. The town provides a suitable backdrop for photo shoots that showcase your company, organisation or institution.

For centuries, the great forest of Saint-Hubert has been a refuge for wildlife and a hunter’s paradise. In this legendary forest, a true natural sanctuary, a stag bearing a cross is said to have appeared to a noble hunter named Hubert and converted him. Thus was born the legend of Saint Hubert.
His cult spread from the 13th century onwards, from the North Sea to the Alps, and from the Rhine to the Loire. Hubert, who was bishop of the diocese of Tongeren-Maastricht in the 8th century, was quickly canonised as a saint, 16 years after his death. Legend later portrayed him as a converted hunter and a healer of rabies. In the 9th century, his body was transferred from Liège to the fearsome Ardennes forest, to the monastery of Andage (the future town of Saint-Hubert).
