ABOUT THE HAUTS-DE-FRANCE REGION

The Hauts-de-France region is home to numerous talented photographers, and opportunities for striking imagery are abundant there.

Hauts-de-France is an administrative region in northern France, created by the 2014 territorial reform. Formed by the merger of Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Picardy (which were themselves created in 1972), it was initially given the provisional name Nord-Pas-de-Calais-Picardy. It covers an area of 31,806 km² and comprises five departments: Aisne, Nord, Oise, Pas-de-Calais and Somme. Xavier Bertrand has been its president since 4 January 2016, and its regional capital is Lille, the region’s largest city and formerly the capital of Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Amiens, the capital of the former Picardie, is the region’s second-largest city.

The region borders Île-de-France to the south, Normandy to the west and the Grand Est to the east. It also shares a border with Belgium along its entire north-eastern boundary, and is bordered by the English Channel and the North Sea to the west and north.

Situated in the heart of Europe, with a population of 6,009,976 as at 1 January 2015 and a population density of 189 inhabitants per square kilometre, it is the third most populous region in France and the second most densely populated in mainland France after Île-de-France.

In addition to its many picturesque alleyways and distinctive atmosphere, Hauts-de-France offers numerous green spaces and attractive walks. The region provides a suitable backdrop for distinctive photo reports that showcase your company, organisation or institution.

The Hauts-de-France region now has five regional nature parks (PNR). This demonstrates a strong commitment to preserving our environment and its biodiversity.

In France, which has 56 Regional Nature Parks (PNRs) covering an area home to nearly 4 million people, the Hauts-de-France region has five PNRs: the Scarpe-Escaut Park (1968 – the first PNR established in France), the Caps et Marais d’Opale Regional Nature Park (1986), the Avesnois Regional Nature Park (1998), the Oise-Pays de France Regional Nature Park (2004) and the Baie de Somme-Picardie Maritime Regional Nature Park (2020).
A Regional Nature Park is a rural, inhabited area whose landscapes, natural environments and cultural heritage must be protected and promoted. This is achieved through an innovative policy on spatial planning and economic, social and cultural development that involves its inhabitants as much as possible.

Each park is organised around a charter that sets out the missions and objectives for conserving and developing the area. This charter is valid for 12 years and may be renewed. It imposes rights and obligations on the member local authorities.

Wooded areas, hedgerows, agricultural and market garden crops, distinctive flora and fauna, local produce, traditional skills… Each of our Regional Nature Parks has its own unique characteristics, which are promoted as part of a tourism policy.
