We explain how HDR photography works

What is HDR photography?
HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography is a technique that enables professional photographers and discerning amateurs to capture images with a wider range of luminosities than a traditional camera can manage. It is particularly useful for high-contrast subjects such as outdoor landscapes, historic buildings and interiors.
The most common method of creating an HDR image is to take several photos of the same scene at different exposures, usually using a tripod to hold the camera still. These images are then combined using image processing software to create a single photo that reflects the brightness levels of the original scene.

How do I create an HDR photo?
There are several methods for creating HDR photos, but the most common is called "exposure bracketing". This involves taking a series of photos of the same scene at different exposures, usually using an exposure interval of 1EV (stop) between each photo. For example, if you take a photo at a normal exposure of 1/125th of a second at f/8 and ISO 100, you could take a second photo at 1/60th of a second at f/8 and ISO 100, then a third at 1/30th of a second at f/8 and ISO 100. These three photos can then be combined to create an HDR image. Here, it's essential to maintain the same aperture and sensitivity.
One of the main advantages of HDR photography is that it captures details in both the dark and light areas of a scene that would normally be lost in a single photo taken at normal exposure. This results in richer, more realistic images.
Which HDR software?
There are many HDR processing programs available, each with its own features and adjustment options. Here are some of the best HDR processing software available on the market:
