Civil Society Days 2019

The 2019 Civil Society Days were held at a crucial time for Europe, in the wake of the Sibiu summit and the European elections, and ahead of the formation of the new European Parliament and Commission.

Our democratic systems are currently under pressure that threatens fundamental values (respect for human rights, individual freedom, equality, the rule of law) and the space for civil society within the European Union. The result is a worrying erosion of democracy and a shrinking civic space in many parts of the EU.

Against this backdrop, and in view of the transformation processes facing the EU, particularly in the economic, energy and ecological, social, democratic and participatory fields, this edition of the Civil Society Days focused on two main pillars - democracy and sustainable development - with the aim of analyzing their links and interactions.

Democracy being the essential soil for the creation of a more sustainable society, economy and environment, six interactive workshops were organized, taking a closer look at what "sustainable democracy in Europe" would mean from the following angles:

• Resilient democracies: the positive impact of civic action and organized civil society

• Towards more inclusive youth organizations

• Transition to an economy for people and planet

• E-democracy, citizen advocacy and alternative forms of active participation

• Protecting freedom of expression in culture and education

• Economy and democracy in the labor market: for a resilient and sustainable path.

Our professional photographer, Daïna Le Lardic, captured the event Les journées de la Société Civile 2019 perfectly. She captured the highlights of the various workshops and panel discussions at the Comité Economique et Social Européen (CESE) or European Economic and Social Committee (EESC).
