Promoting equality between men and women in terms of economic independence, closing the gender pay gap and strengthening the gender balance have received increasing attention from European decision-makers. Gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls are also among the United Nations' sustainable development goals.

Realizing these ambitions is essential to fostering sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth. However, while significant progress has been made, inequalities persist, and it is essential to explore further how greater equality between men and women can be promoted, and how these efforts could help Europe's economic prosperity.

The Section for Economic and Monetary Union and Economic and Social Cohesion (ECO) of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) has decided to organize a public debate entitled "The benefits of gender equality for the European economy" on November 29, 2019, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, to explore how policies to promote gender equality could help boost Europe's economic performance, and what role European civil society could play in supporting the development and implementation of these policies.
