The European Semester and cohesion policy - Towards a new European strategy for the post-2020 period

In the proposal for the multiannual financial framework for the period 2021-2027, the European Commission has called for stronger links between the European Semester and EU funding in order to improve the effectiveness of actions financed under cohesion policy and produce more sustainable results. From now on, the European Semester will focus more on investment needs in each country, which have already been flagged up in this year's country reports, in order to guide programming decisions for the period 2021-2027. However, the consequences of these new, closer links have not yet been studied in detail, and require specific attention.

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is therefore organizing a public hearing entitled "The European Semester and Cohesion Policy - Towards a new European strategy for the post-2020 period" , which will bring together politicians, academics and representatives of organized civil society with a view to developing policy proposals to help forge these closer links and enhance sustainable growth. The results of the hearing will feed both into the EESC opinion currently being drawn up on the same subject, and into future decisions by EU leaders in this area. At a time when the Europe 2020 strategy is coming to an end, these proposals can contribute to the development of a new long-term European strategy, which would take into account the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the implementation of the European Social Rights Framework.

Our professional photographer Daïna Le Lardic perfectly captured the event on The European Semester and Cohesion Policy - Towards a new European strategy for the post-2020 period. She captured the highlights of the various workshops and panel discussions at the Comité Economique et Social Européen (CESE) or European Economic and Social Committee (EESC).
