EU Presidents present their priorities for the future of Europe
The President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, said, "Without rules, the strongest will dominate and the weakest will be excluded."
Responding to journalists, President Sassoli said: "Ask yourself this: why does everyone want to divide us today? Because when there are common rules, we live better and defend the weakest. When there are no rules, only the strongest win. Maybe those who want to divide us are afraid of a world with rules. At the moment, I believe that the EU's importance lies in the answer we can give to this question. Not only for ourselves, but also for a global world that must respect rules. Without rules, the strong will dominate and the weak will be excluded. This is not what the European Union wants."
Following their meeting on Thursday January 30 at the Maison Jean Monnet in Bazoches (France), the aim of which was to reflect on the challenges facing the European Union, Presidents Sassoli, Michel and von der Leyen delivered a statement today at the Parlamentarium, the Parliament's visitors' center in Brussels.
The departure of the United Kingdom marks a new chapter in the history of the European Union. Today's declaration aims to anticipate the internal and external challenges that will have to be met in the years to come, and to determine how to involve citizens, civil society and national parliaments more closely in the debates and decision-making that will shape Europe's future...
