EU Presidents set out their priorities for the future of Europe.

The President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, said: “Without rules, the strongest will dominate and the weakest will be excluded.”

Speaking to journalists, President Sassoli said: “Ask yourselves this: why is everyone trying to divide us today? Because when there are common rules, we live better and we protect the most vulnerable. When there are no rules, only the strongest prevail. Perhaps those who want to divide us fear a world with rules. At this moment, I believe that the very significance of the EU lies in the answer we can give to this question. Not just for us, but also for a globalised world that must abide by rules. Without rules, the strongest will dominate and the weakest will be excluded. That is not what the European Union wants."

Following their meeting on Thursday 30 January at the Maison Jean Monnet in Bazoches (France), the aim of which was to consider the challenges facing the European Union, Presidents Sassoli, Michel and von der Leyen delivered a statement today at the Parlamentarium, the European Parliament’s visitor centre in Brussels.

The United Kingdom’s departure marks a new chapter in the history of the European Union. Today’s statement aims to anticipate the internal and external challenges that will need to be addressed in the coming years and to determine how to further involve citizens, civil society and national parliaments in the debates and decision-making that will shape the future of Europe.
