Summit with representatives from the Western Balkans

The Speakers of the parliaments of the Western Balkans will meet at the European Parliament, under the patronage of President Sassoli, to discuss the European prospects of their region.

The Speakers of the parliaments of Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia and Serbia will meet on Tuesday to discuss European prospects for the Western Balkans. They will be joined by the President of the Croatian Parliament, the country holding the rotating presidency of the EU Council.

They will also hold talks with the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, with the leaders of the EP's political groups, and with the Foreign Affairs Committee's working group on the Western Balkans.

President Sassoli said: "I am delighted to welcome the Speakers of the parliaments of the Western Balkans to the European Parliament. This Assembly has always been firmly committed to a European perspective for the Western Balkans. We were very disappointed by the European Council's refusal to open negotiations with Albania and Northern Macedonia last October. Now it's time to move forward together and keep things moving forward. Parliaments are indispensable in this respect. I have organized this summit so that we can develop a strategy for the role parliaments can play in driving the EU's reform agenda and in implementing concrete measures to meet the European aspirations of the people of the Western Balkans. I am convinced that there is no better time or place to do this."

Parliamentary cooperation, the future of Europe and the enlargement process, which has been deadlocked since disagreement in the Council on the opening of accession negotiations with Albania and Northern Macedonia, are expected to feature on the agenda. In its resolution adopted in October 2019, Parliament expressed its deep disappointment that Albania and Northern Macedonia had been unable to start accession negotiations, stressing that the enlargement process had played a decisive role in stabilizing the Western Balkans.

The meeting with members of the Foreign Affairs Committee's working group on the Western Balkans will be open to the public.
