The European Union and the memory of the Holocaust

The term Holocaust refers to the murder of six million European Jews, as well as Roma and members of other social groups, condemned to annihilation by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. From 1933 onwards, the Nazi regime implemented a policy of despoilment, state discrimination and persecution of the Jews, followed by pogroms and mass deportation to concentration camps.

This policy was then extended to all the territories and states he dominated in Europe during the Second World War. Mass summary executions ("Shoah by bullets") and extermination camps were the result. The executioners were tried at the Nuremberg Trials in 1945-1946, but the court preferred to indict them for crimes against humanity rather than genocide.

It wasn't until 2005, on the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, that a United Nations resolution designated January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day, also known as "International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust". In the European Union, numerous programs are designed to perpetuate the memory of the tragedies that marked the continent's history.

As early as 1995, the European Parliament adopted resolutions calling for remembrance not only through commemorations, but also through education. In November 2018, the European Union became a permanent international partner of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). This information note is an updated version of the January 2018 version.
