There aren't really any rules when it comes to the model's gaze during a studio portrait photo shoot.
Stare into the lens, smile, look up or down, melancholy mood, etc., it doesn't really matter. The most important thing is that the photo portrait exudes emotion. Being in front of the lens can sometimes seem a little stressful. The model isn't necessarily at ease at the start of the portrait shoot, and her smile or face can become tense during the shoot.
