Enghien is a French-speaking town with special status in Belgium (it lies on the language border), situated in the Walloon Region in the province of Hainaut.

It offers language support for Dutch speakers. Its population grew at a rate of over 15 per cent between 1981 and 2003 and by 27.78 per cent during the 21st century.

Founded by Englebert of Enghien in the 11th century, the city boasts a prestigious history.

Enghien was the first barony in the County of Hainaut. A military stronghold of the Lords of Enghien in the early 13th century, it later became a country residence for the House of Luxembourg.
