ABOUT THE TOWN OF HUY

Huy is a French-speaking town in Belgium, located in the Walloon Region; it is the district capital of the province of Liège.
Huy is situated on the River Meuse at its confluence with the River Hoyoux, halfway between Namur and Liège. The inhabitants of Huy are known as the Hutois.

The municipality of Huy extends along the right bank and the southern slope of the Meuse, which forms the municipal boundary, with the exception of the urban districts of Entre-Deux-Portes, Saint-Pierre, Mont Falise and Statte, which are situated on the left bank.

Most of the municipality lies within the Sambre-et-Meuse valley and the Condroz Ardennes, a wooded sub-region of the Condroz. Huy is situated at the confluence of the Hoyoux and the Meuse.

Huy has a history stretching back a thousand years. It has built its reputation first on its artisanal expertise, and subsequently on its industrial and commercial prowess. Proud of its past and mindful of its present, it is shaping its future. Huy is one of the oldest towns in the country. The original settlement, certainly dating back to Roman times, developed around the castrum on the right bank. According to legend, as early as the very beginning of the 2nd century AD, at the foot of the rock, Saint Materne is said to have dedicated a sanctuary to the Virgin Mary, the forerunner of our collegiate church.
