ABOUT LESSINES

Lessines is home to numerous talented photographers, and the town offers many opportunities to capture striking images.

Lessine is a French-speaking town in Belgium situated on the River Dendre in the Walloon Region, in the province of Hainaut.

The town has deep historical roots: legend attributes the founding of Lessines to Charlemagne. In the Middle Ages, Lessines became an important centre in the County of Hainaut and, by the end of the 13th century, had earned the title of ‘Capital of the Terre des Débats’. Around 1230–1240, Arnould IV of Oudenaarde built new fortifications, two of whose tower bases still stand today.

On the main square stands the town hall, built in the Flemish Neo-Renaissance style, which bears witness to the city’s wealth at that time. The former quarry boat loading bay (listed for conservation) and the old locks and mills along the River Dendre (near the Notre-Dame à la Rose Hospital farm) also illustrate the town’s social history and the industrial archaeology associated with the quarry basin.

Furthermore, Lessines was also the birthplace of two great surrealists: the poet Louis Scutenaire in Ollignies and his friend, the painter René Magritte, whose birthplace can be seen on the street that now bears his name, formerly known as Rue de la Gare. In addition, a crossroads serves as a reminder of this illustrious painter to all who pass by.

Furthermore, folklore and traditions remain quite vibrant and diverse. For instance, on Good Friday, a procession of penitents takes place in the city’s streets; this tradition dates back to the Middle Ages but has been documented since the Spanish period; the Cayoteu 1900 festivities in August recall the town’s quarrying past; and the historic Festin 1583 celebrations on the first weekend of September commemorate a siege of the town by troops or unidentified marauders in either 1578 or 1583.

In addition to its many picturesque narrow streets and distinctive atmosphere, Lessines offers numerous green spaces and pleasant walks. The town provides a suitable setting for photo shoots that showcase your company, organisation or institution.
