ABOUT THE TOWN OF MOUSCRON

Mouscron is a French-speaking city with special status in Belgium, located in Picard Wallonia and formerly the district capital of the province of Hainaut. It is home to numerous skilled photographers, and there are many opportunities for striking imagery.

The town is part of Western Hainaut and also lies within the cultural area of Romanic Flanders. Its emblem is the ‘Hurlu’, a figure who roamed the local countryside during the Wars of Religion and survived through theft and various acts of violence. The people of Mouscron have inherited from their ancestors a love of celebration and conviviality, characteristic of their border region. Thus, the Fête des Hurlus, or Town Festival, is celebrated every year on the first weekend in October. However, this is not the only festival in Mouscron.
Every two years, a Venetian parade is organised as part of “Venice in Mouscron”. On Saturday 1 June 2019, Mouscron will take on a Venetian atmosphere to welcome the famous Venetian masked figures. In other years – specifically even-numbered years – the themes vary. From the Wild West to the Folies Parisiennes via Andalusia, the ‘City of the Hurlus’ takes on a new festive guise each time…

In addition to its many festivals, Mouscron boasts a rich architectural heritage. Its Château des Comtes offers visitors a pleasant stroll along an educational walkway that circles the moat. Visitors can also explore Saint-Barthélémy Church, which houses numerous treasures. In addition to the tombstones of the ‘Lords and Counts of Mouscron’, a magnificent organ is also listed for its historical and aesthetic value. The spacious chancel easily accommodates the instrument, which is acoustically well positioned. From there, visitors can admire the rocaille carvings on the base and the imposing wedge-shaped bellows. It is the only two-manual organ to have retained so much of its 18th-century material.

Mouscron also offers extensive green spaces, a lake, woodland and several scenic walks. This makes it a suitable location for distinctive photo shoots that showcase your company, organisation or institution.
