The Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Geel, Belgium, is a leading European Union research centre. It reports to the European Commission and brings together experts from various fields, such as chemistry, biology, ecology and environmental sciences, who work together to find solutions to global challenges.

ISOWAY, an agency specialising in corporate and institutional photography, recently carried out a photo report inside the JRC in Geel under the direction of a professional photographer. The aim was to capture the spirit of research and discovery that drives the scientists and researchers at the JRC, and to showcase the state-of-the-art facilities and equipment they use.
During our visit, we photographed scientists at work in their laboratories, using state-of-the-art equipment to carry out experiments and tests. We also captured images of the research facilities, such as conference rooms and data centres, as well as images of the equipment used for environmental studies.

One of the main highlights of our report was the underground ultra-low-level gamma spectrometry laboratory (HADES) at the JRC in Geel. This laboratory is equipped with one of the most sensitive gamma detectors in the world, capable of detecting extremely low levels of radioactivity. It is used for research into nuclear safety and for environmental monitoring. The resulting images showcase the expertise and advanced technology deployed in radioactivity research.

We also had the opportunity to photograph the neutron time-of-flight facility (GELINA) at the JRC in Geel. This facility is used for research into nuclear physics, in particular for measuring the properties of atomic nuclei and for studying nuclear reactions. The images taken at this facility show the state-of-the-art equipment used for this cutting-edge research.

The resulting images showcase the researchers’ passion and dedication, as well as the substantial efforts invested in addressing global challenges such as food security, air and water quality, the fight against climate change and the protection of biodiversity. The resulting images attest to the expertise and dedication of the researchers at the JRC in Geel, and demonstrate how scientific progress can help create a safer, more sustainable world.
