Valenciennes is a French commune, historically the capital of the French county of Hainaut and now a sub-prefecture of the Nord department in the Hauts-de-France region.

It is situated at the confluence of the Scheldt and the Rhônelle. Valenciennes, a town with a rich cultural heritage, nicknamed the ‘Athens of the North’, was also a highly prosperous industrial and mining town in the 19th century; the Compagnie des mines d’Anzin opened numerous mines there. The best known is the Dutemple mine, whose reinforced concrete headframe still stands today.

Along with the other towns in the former Nord-Pas-de-Calais coal-mining region, it lies within the sphere of influence of the ‘Lille metropolitan area’, a metropolitan region with a population of nearly 3.8 million, the centre of which – the city of Lille – is just 45 km away.

These include sculptures, engravings and paintings, as well as other works (such as musical compositions) presented in a different form.
