ABOUT THE TOWN OF BEAUVAIS

The city of Beauvais is home to numerous talented photographers, and there are many opportunities to capture striking images there.

Beauvais is a French commune and the prefecture of the Oise department, in the Hauts-de-France region.

With a population of 56,605 (according to the latest census in 2018), Beauvais is the largest town in the department and the eighth largest in the region. It lies to the north of the Paris Basin, on the banks of the Thérain, a tributary of the Oise. Its inhabitants are known as Beauvaisiens. Beauvais is known for its Saint-Pierre de Beauvais Cathedral, a Gothic building with the highest nave in France and the highest Gothic choir in the world; although still unfinished, it remains a leading example of Gothic art at its peak in France. Most of the cathedral’s artworks date from the 17th century.

Keen to improve the quality of the environment across its entire territory, and particularly in the city centre, the City of Beauvais sought to draw up an Urban Quality Charter.
It is a simple and accessible educational tool organised around three key areas: shop fronts, terraces, pavements and roads.
This practical guide walks you through the steps needed to realise your projects. Its goal is to achieve a harmonised approach to the use of public space in the city centre.
Produced in partnership with the CAUE, with the participation of local shopkeepers, the CCIO and the CMAO, the Urban Quality Charter forms part of the ‘New City Centre, New Heart of Life’ project, which aims to revitalise and beautify Beauvais town centre.

Boasting an exceptional heritage, Beauvais was awarded the ‘Villes d’art et d’histoire’ label in 2012. Created in 1985 by the Ministry of Culture and Communication, the Villes et Pays d’art et d’histoire label is awarded to territories that pursue an active policy of heritage promotion and raise awareness of architecture and the built environment among a wide audience.
Formalised by the signing of an agreement between the State and the City of Beauvais, the ‘Ville d’art et d’histoire’ label guarantees the quality of the initiatives implemented to promote heritage, as well as the expertise of staff who are qualified and accredited by the Ministry.
