ABOUT THE CITY OF CALAIS

The city of Calais is home to numerous talented photographers, and there are many opportunities to capture striking images there.

Calais is a French commune and sub-prefecture of the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region. Its inhabitants are known as Calaisiens.
The town of Calais is the most populous in the department, although it is not the county town – that distinction falls to Arras. It is also one of the largest (just behind the sprawling municipality of Oye-Plage). Situated opposite the south-east of England, its port (France’s largest for passenger transport) and the Channel Tunnel make it the main French city linking the country with Great Britain.

In addition to its characteristic narrow streets and distinctive atmosphere, Calais offers numerous green spaces and attractive promenades. The city provides a suitable backdrop for photographers and for creating distinctive photo reports that present your company, organisation or institution.

The national jury for the 2017 ‘Villes et villages Fleuris’ competition awarded the town of Calais a 4th Fleur in recognition of the ambitious projects to improve the quality of life undertaken by the local council.

Every year, the City’s gardeners develop floral themes for the City. They work to ensure consistency across all displays, both in colour schemes and layout. They showcase Calais by varying plant varieties and arrangements while respecting the environment.

The council’s gardeners aim to achieve an overall harmony in the city’s planting schemes. This is why, each year, the choice of colours and plant species is determined by their location. The colour scheme of the planting depends on the distance from the Town Hall.
The colours change gradually, with a recurring colour in each flowerbed. This colour scheme is reflected in the flowerbeds, on the roundabouts and on street furniture, such as planters.
