ABOUT THE TOWN OF CAMBRAI

The town of Cambrai is home to numerous talented photographers, and there are many opportunities to capture striking images there.

Cambrai is a French commune in the Nord department, in the Hauts-de-France region. As the sub-prefecture of the department, Cambrai is a medium-sized town; it lies at the heart of the Cambrai urban area. Its urban area is, however, more extensive. Together with Lille and the towns of the former Nord-Pas-de-Calais coalfield, it also forms part of a metropolitan area with a population of nearly 3.8 million, known as the ‘Lille metropolitan area’.

In addition to its characteristic narrow streets and distinctive atmosphere, Cambrai offers numerous green spaces and pleasant walks. The city provides an ideal setting for photographers and for creating unique photo reports that showcase your company, organisation or institution.

Cambrai lies in the Scheldt valley, on the edge of the Hainaut and Artois plateaux and the vast, gently undulating plains that characterise the Cambrésis landscape. Cambrai is best known today for its famous ‘bêtise’ sweets – available in mint, violet or apple flavours – yet it is also notable for its history and rich heritage. Approaching its second millennium, with roots stretching back to the Gallo-Roman era, the city is characterised by its rich and distinctive past. Shaped over the centuries by its status as a border town, it blends the cultural influences of the great European powers that have coveted it.  

Today, the streets of Cambrai tell the city’s story: the remains of its fortifications, prestigious religious buildings, mansions and Art Deco houses bear witness to this rich history and form a link between the past and the present. The significance and variety of its heritage, the appeal of its urban layout, and its traditions and specialities enabled Cambrai to become the first town in the Nord department to be awarded the ‘Ville d’art et d’histoire’ designation in 1992.

Cambrai invites you to explore its streets, where half-timbered houses, stately homes, Flemish mansions and Art Deco buildings blend harmoniously.
