ABOUT THE CITY OF ROUBAIX
The city of Roubaix is home to numerous skilled photographers, and it offers many opportunities to capture striking images.
Roubaix is a French commune in the Nord department, in the Hauts-de-France region. It serves as the administrative centre for two cantons. Formerly known as Robacum (around 863, according to the map by Nicaise Fabius), it was subsequently named Rubaix in the 11th century and, more commonly, Rosbais and Rosbacum in the 12th century.
With a population of just under 100,000, Roubaix – the third-largest town in the Hauts-de-France region in terms of population – is one of the urban centres of the Lille European Metropolis (MEL).
Designated a ‘City of Art and History’ since 2001, Roubaix is notable for its architectural heritage and for the economic boom it experienced during the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, thanks to the textile industry, of which it was one of the world capitals at the start of the 20th century. It was also in Roubaix that the leading French mail-order companies (La Redoute, Les 3 Suisses) were founded. The city is also distinguished by its rich network of voluntary organisations and its pioneering role in the social sector (Inter-professional Committee for Housing, resident participation, the social and solidarity economy, etc.).
In addition to its characteristic narrow streets and distinctive atmosphere, Roubaix offers numerous green spaces and pleasant walks. The city provides an ideal setting for photographers and for creating unique photo reports that showcase your company, organisation or institution.
Roubaix is a multifaceted city, well suited to photography.
Roubaix, with its rich heritage, has pursued a proactive and ambitious policy of reclaiming, preserving, restoring and promoting that heritage for over twenty years.
In 2001, the City and the State signed the ‘City of Art and History’ agreement, which accompanied the creation of the ‘Remarkable Heritage Site’, also established in 2001, as part of a strong commitment to the protection and promotion of heritage. The City is now home to forty-five historic monuments and one listed site, Barbieux Park.
The Ministry of Culture, Directorate-General for Heritage, awards the ‘City or Region of Art and History’ label to local authorities that organise activities to promote and showcase architecture and heritage. It guarantees the expertise of tour guides and architecture and heritage guides, as well as the quality of their work.
Today, a network spanning 190 towns and countries offers its expertise throughout France.
The ‘City of Art and History’ initiative, run by the Culture Department and the Roubaix Tourist Office, offers numerous opportunities to discover these treasures through guided tours, exhibitions, events and workshops. Young and old alike are welcome – whether you’re a local or a visitor!
Derived from the Latin ‘mater’, meaning ‘mother’, ‘matrimoine’ refers to the legacy of mothers. Coined along the same lines as ‘patrimoine’ (heritage), this word, like its counterpart, refers to the memory of past creations… and focuses on the achievements of women. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a term that originated from feminist movements! The term dates back to the Middle Ages. Transformed, forgotten and then erased, the concept of ‘matrimoine’ has been resurfacing over the past few decades.
By highlighting women’s legacy, ‘matrimoine’ effectively enshrines women in a city’s artistic, cultural and social history, as well as its educational, sporting, labour and political history. Promoting ‘matrimoine’ helps to showcase a society built on a shared, diverse and egalitarian heritage.
