ABOUT THE TOWN OF TOURCOING

The town of Tourcoing is home to numerous skilled photographers, and it offers many opportunities to capture striking images.

Tourcoing is a French commune in the Nord department, in the Hauts-de-France region. With a population of 97,442 as at 1 January 2021 according to INSEE, it is the fourth-largest town in the Hauts-de-France region, behind Lille, Amiens and Roubaix. It serves as the administrative centre of two cantons.
Bordering Belgium, Tourcoing is part of the Lille European Metropolis, where it functions as one of the urban centres and the third-largest municipality by population.
The city is notable for the economic boom it experienced during the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, thanks to the textile industry.
It is nicknamed ‘the city of Broutteux’.

The history of Tourcoing is closely linked to that of the 19th-century industrial textile revolution. Throughout the city, former industrial buildings – once the heart of the textile industry – are being brought back to life and regaining their former splendour.

The first mention of Tourcoing dates back to 1080, a few years after that of Lille (1056). At that time, Tourcoing had the third-largest population in Flanders, after Lille and Douai.
The year 1790 marks the official founding of the town of Tourcoing (first town council). At that time, the textile industry (wool weaving) was already the main speciality of Tourcoing’s workers.

In addition to its many picturesque narrow streets and distinctive atmosphere, Tourcoing offers numerous green spaces and pleasant walks. The city is well suited for photographers and for creating unique photo reports that showcase your company, organisation or institution.

Tourcoing is a multifaceted city, well suited to photography.

With its rich history and industrial textile heritage, Tourcoing is a dynamic city with ambitious projects that foster an environment in which as many people as possible can thrive, live together and pursue their entrepreneurial ventures.
Tourcoing is a creative city driven by dynamic social and economic activity, offering a wide range of community, cultural and sporting events.

During the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century, the town experienced rapid growth centred on the textile industry. Its specialities were drapery, followed by wool carding, combing and weaving. Buoyed by this flourishing industry, Tourcoing expanded rapidly: the railway (1842), a rise in population (100,000 inhabitants in 1910), growth in the textile sector (35,000 jobs in 1865), the tramway (1877), urbanisation of the area, and international renown (the International Exhibition of Textile Industries in 1906).

In 1960, Tourcoing still had 174 combing and spinning mills.

However, with the textile crisis at the end of the 20th century, 160 textile firms closed down in Tourcoing.

We provide a professional photographer in Tourcoing whose skills match your requirements for photojournalism.
