ABOUT THE CITY OF TROYES

The city of Troyes is home to numerous talented photographers, and there are many opportunities to capture beautiful images there.

Troyes is a commune in the Aube department (of which it is the prefecture) in the Grand Est region. The commune is divided into five cantons, of which it is the administrative centre.

The history and exceptional richness of the city of Troyes’ heritage can be discovered step by step as you wander through its streets, squares and courtyards. Archaeological excavations have shown that the site of Troyes was occupied as far back as prehistoric times, but the first to leave tangible traces of their presence were the ‘Tricasses’, a Gallic tribe that accepted Roman occupation in its capital, which then became Augustobona. The city already benefited from its location at a crossroads, close to the River Seine and linked to the Via Agrippa, which ran from Milan to Boulogne-sur-Mer.

The Ministry of Culture, Directorate-General for Heritage, awards the designation ‘Cities and Regions of Art and History’ to local authorities that promote their heritage. It guarantees the competence of tour guides and heritage and architecture interpreters, as well as the quality of the initiatives undertaken. From archaeological remains to contemporary architecture, the ‘Villes et Pays’ showcase heritage in all its diversity. Today, a network of 202 ‘Villes et Pays d’art et d’histoire’ offers its expertise throughout France.

Nearby, Châlons-en-Champagne, Reims, Langres, Sedan, Charleville-Mézières and Bar-le-Duc have been awarded the ‘City of Art and History’ designation. The Heritage Promotion Department coordinates initiatives in Troyes, a City of Art and History, in collaboration with the DRAC Grand Est.

The ‘City of Art and History’ label stems from a policy to promote heritage and raise awareness of architecture, implemented by the Ministry of Culture since 1985 as part of a partnership with local authorities.
