ABOUT THE TOWN OF VILLENEUVE D’ASCQ

The town of Villeneuve d’Ascq is home to numerous skilled photographers, and there are many opportunities to capture striking images there.

Villeneuve d’Ascq is a French commune and technology park in the Nord department of the Hauts-de-France region. It forms part of the European Metropolis of Lille.

Established in the late 1960s as a result of a political initiative by the State, the new town of Lille-Est was designed to provide an urban setting for the universities and to accommodate the population of the Lille metropolitan area. The merger of the municipalities of Annappes, Ascq and Flers-lez-Lille in 1970 made it a municipality in its own right.

On Palm Sunday night, 1–2 April 1944, the people of Ascq were roused by an explosion. That night was the longest in Ascq’s history. Eighty-six men aged between 15 and 74 were massacred by soldiers of the 12th SS-Panzer Division Hitlerjugend in retaliation for an act of sabotage carried out by the ‘Ascq group’, part of the Voix du Nord movement; the sabotage was, in fact, aimed at a German goods train.
To preserve the memory of those who were massacred, the people of Ascq erected a memorial complex on the site of the tragedy, which was unveiled in 1955. In 1970, when the municipalities of Ascq, Annappes and Flers merged, the name Villeneuve d’Ascq was chosen instead of Villeneuve-en-Flandre so that the tragic fate of the victims would never be forgotten.

In addition to its characteristic narrow streets and distinctive atmosphere, Villeneuve d’Ascq offers numerous green spaces and pleasant walks. The town provides an ideal setting for photographers and for creating unique photo reports that showcase your company, organisation or institution.

Villeneuve d’Ascq is a multifaceted town, well suited to photography.

The Tourist Office and the city have created five walking tours that allow visitors to (re)discover the city and the diversity of its neighbourhoods. Click below on the brochure of your choice. Enjoy your walk!
