ABOUT COLMAR

Colmar is home to numerous talented photographers, and the city offers many opportunities to capture striking images.

Colmar is a commune in the Haut-Rhin department. As the department’s prefecture, it has been part of the Grand Est region since 1 January 2016. Colmar is situated in the historic and cultural region of Alsace.
It had a population of nearly 70,000 at the last census in 2016, making it the second-largest municipality in the Haut-Rhin department and the third-largest in Alsace in terms of population, after Strasbourg and Mulhouse. Colmar has chosen to join forces with these cities within the Alsace Metropolitan Area, which brings together the major urban centres of Alsace with the aim of exerting influence within the new Grand Est region. Its inhabitants are known as Colmariens.

The coat of arms of Colmar, which in all likelihood derives from a combination of ‘Kolben’ (the mace) and ‘Columbaria’ (the Latin name for Colmar), appears on the oldest seal of the city of Colmar, used in 1214, in the form of three maces with balls arranged in a pale above the Hohenstaufen leopard. 

Since 1425, when Colmar acquired the office of the Schultheiss, who presided over the court, the mace has featured on the court’s seal. At the end of the 15th century, this coat of arms was depicted in enamelled form on one of the stained-glass windows of the Décapole. The field is silver mottled; the mace, placed in a band, is black, whilst the points are red. The shaft is sometimes straight, fitted with a hilt; sometimes curved and widening towards the bottom – in which case the heraldic figure resembles a comet; and sometimes it takes the form of a stem that has been cut off and hollowed out at its base. 

When the General Armorial was compiled under Louis XIV, the old coats of arms were combined with red and green, the city’s colours, which were used in particular for the livery of municipal staff. 
Furthermore, according to a popular interpretation, the heraldic motif is described there as a spur wheel. The mace is restored to its place in the official confirmation of the town’s coat of arms dated 10 May 1820, which otherwise follows the Armorial général.

In addition to its many picturesque narrow streets and unique atmosphere, Colmar boasts numerous green spaces and beautiful walks that are not to be missed. It is an ideal setting for photographers and for creating unique photo reports that showcase your company, organisation or institution.

Colmar is a multifaceted city, well suited to photography.

Colmar is the ‘Capital of Alsace Wines’. This title, officially recognised on 1 November 1999, was largely secured through the efforts of Gilbert Meyer, who was Deputy Mayor at the time. Aware of the potential impact on the town’s image and reputation, he submitted the application to the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI).

This approach was agreed in consultation with wine industry professionals, the Comité interprofessionnel des vins d’Alsace (CIVA) and the Association des viticulteurs d’Alsace (AVA), the umbrella organisation for the protection of appellations.

The INPI’s decision was, of course, influenced by Colmar’s exemplary involvement in viticulture: as the headquarters of all Alsace’s wine-growing bodies, it hosts a wine exchange and operates a vineyard (formerly the Oberlin Institute), both of which are over a century old.

The city is also a hub for research and experimentation in this field, whilst skilfully combining festive celebrations with the promotion of regional produce: who hasn’t heard of the Alsace Wine Fair?

The Nature Observatory, situated in the Neuland Forest east of Colmar, is a charity active in environmental education and sustainable development in the Colmar area.

This nature centre aims to welcome visitors of all backgrounds and, through tailored and innovative educational approaches, to raise their awareness, educate them and train them to develop a coherent understanding of, and behaviours that show respect for, nature, the environment and heritage.

The Nature Observatory also aims to provide access to knowledge and useful information for those wishing to contribute to the achievement of sustainable development.

Completely renovated, the former forester’s cottage now features an extension comprising two rooms that can accommodate the public for nature-themed events and activities.
