ABOUT THE CITY OF METZ

Metz is home to numerous skilled photographers, and the city offers many opportunities to capture striking images.

Metz is a French commune in the Moselle department, in Lorraine. As the departmental prefecture, it has belonged to the Grand Est administrative region since 1 January 2016 and hosts the region’s plenary assemblies. Metz and its surrounding area, which formed part of the Three Bishoprics from 1552 to 1790, were landlocked between the Duchy of Lorraine and the Duchy of Bar until 1766. Furthermore, from 1974 to 2015, the city was the capital of the Lorraine region.

A city with a history stretching back two millennia, the Celtic oppidum of the Mediomatriques – known by the Latin name Divodurum Mediomatricorum, and later as Mettis – became the capital of the Frankish kingdom of Austrasia. A trading centre within the Carolingian Empire, Metz was the seat of a powerful bishopric and a major commercial and banking centre of the Holy Roman Empire. Coveted by the Kingdom of France, Metz became a French stronghold in the 16th century, before being temporarily annexed by the German Empire at the end of the 19th century (Alsace-Moselle).

The 180 cities across 72 countries that currently make up this network are working together towards a common goal: to place creativity and the cultural industries at the heart of their local development plans and to cooperate actively at an international level.

• to strengthen the creation, production, distribution and dissemination of cultural activities, goods and services;

The French Creative Cities are Enghien-les-Bains, Saint-Étienne, Limoges, Lyon, Angoulême and Metz.
