ABOUT THE CITY OF MULHOUSE

Mulhouse is home to countless talented photographers, and there are many opportunities to capture stunning images there.

Mulhouse is a French city and the capital of the Haut-Rhin department, situated in the Grand Est region. As the successor to the Republic of Mulhouse, it forms part of the cultural and historical region of Alsace.

It is the second-largest city in Alsace (after Strasbourg) and the fourth-largest conurbation in the Grand Est region in terms of population. Fifty-six per cent of the conurbation’s inhabitants live in its suburbs, leading to significant and growing commuter traffic. However, Mulhouse is the third-largest inter-municipal community in the Grand Est region in terms of population (272,985 inhabitants), behind the Greater Reims urban community (298,046 inhabitants) but ahead of the Greater Nancy metropolitan area (260,665 inhabitants). Its urban area has a population of 286,730 (40 per cent of the population of the Haut-Rhin) and its labour market area comprises 431,337 people.

Mulhouse has held the ‘City of Art and History’ designation since 2008. This mark of excellence for exceptional heritage is awarded by the Ministry of Culture. Mulhouse is the first city in Alsace to have been awarded this designation. It is a member of a network that currently comprises 190 areas (cities or regions of art and history).

All heritage-promotion initiatives offered by the Maison du Patrimoine are organised under the ‘City of Art and History’ scheme: exhibitions, leaflets, individual or group discovery tours, activities for young people (workshops, educational projects), European Heritage Days…

In addition to its many characteristic narrow streets and unique atmosphere, Mulhouse boasts numerous green spaces and beautiful walks that are not to be missed. It is the ideal setting for photographers and unique photo reports that showcase your company, organisation or institution.

Mulhouse came into being relatively late. Permanent settlement there is only attested from the 9th century onwards. The natural, marshy terrain is, in fact, not particularly conducive to human settlement.

The presence of water – the area is crossed by the Ill and the Doller – becomes an asset when it can be used to generate hydraulic power to drive mills and provide for the livelihood of the local population. Legend has it that Mulhouse was founded after a wounded soldier married the miller’s daughter who had taken him in.

Beyond the legend, the name Mulhouse (or rather Mülhausen, ‘the houses by the mill’) derives from the presence of a mill. The mill wheel remains the city’s symbol.

Mulhouse is a multifaceted city, well suited to photography.

Mulhouse is home to a rich heritage, reflecting a unique history. This heritage is not limited to the 18 buildings listed or classified as historic monuments, including the 13th-century Saint-Jean Chapel, the 16th-century Town Hall, the 18th-century Loewenfels House, the 19th-century Saint-Etienne Temple and the DMC Refectory, the Municipal Baths and the 20th-century ring-shaped building. It also includes, among other things:

• the workers’ housing estate built from the mid-19th century onwards to the north of the city,
• the Rebberg district, the industrial district, which developed some thirty years later to the south of the city,
• industrial buildings such as those of DMC or the former SACM,
• barracks which were established to the north-east of Mulhouse during the period of the Annexation,
• the magnificent Théâtre de la Sinne,
• More recently, it has covered the Tour de l’Europe, a major city landmark.

It also boasts a rich natural heritage, much of which dates back to the 19th century, such as the Zoological and Botanical Gardens and Salvator Park.

Mulhouse has had a special connection with water since its very beginnings. The heritage signage along the waterfront, installed as part of the Mulhouse Diagonales project, highlights 14 iconic sites to discover or rediscover.
