ABOUT THE CITY OF AMIENS
Amiens is home to numerous talented photographers, and the city offers many opportunities for striking images.
Amiens is a French commune and the prefecture of the Somme department in the Hauts-de-France region.
The historic capital of Picardy, with a population of 134,057 – known as Amiénois according to the latest census in 2017 – it is the region’s second-largest city after Lille and the twenty-seventh-largest in France. Situated within the Paris–London–Brussels triangle, it lies at the heart of the Greater Amiens metropolitan area, which is home to nearly 400,000 people.
Amiens, the French city with the highest number of UNESCO World Heritage sites, is famous for its Notre-Dame Cathedral, a jewel of Gothic art and one of the largest cathedrals in the world.
Nicknamed the ‘Little Venice of the North’ due to its many canals and the hortillonnages (a network of floating gardens covering 300 hectares), Amiens boasts a rich heritage and picturesque neighbourhoods that reflect two millennia of history. Since 1992, the ‘Ville d’art et d’histoire’ designation has recognised the protection and promotion of this heritage.
The city’s contemporary image is closely linked to three aspects that extend beyond its borders: its status as the historic capital of Picardy, its university with over 26,000 students, and the vibrancy of its cultural life, underpinned by infrastructure and events of national significance.
In addition to its many picturesque narrow streets and distinctive atmosphere, Amiens offers extensive green spaces and pleasant walks. The city provides an ideal setting for photographers and for creating unique photo reports that showcase your company, organisation or institution.
Amiens is a multifaceted city, well suited to photography.
Situated in the heart of a rich agricultural region, Amiens has developed on both sides of the wide Somme valley and around the confluence with the Avre and Selle rivers. It offers an attractive living environment thanks to the abundance of natural and landscaped spaces and a well-ordered landscape, characterised by the traditional brick ‘Amiens-style’ houses.
With 281 hectares of green spaces, 300 hectares of woodland, 300 hectares of market gardens, 30 hectares of marshland, its river and 65 km of waterways, Amiens is a green and blue city. Awarded the maximum rating of 4 flowers in the ‘Villes et Villages Fleuris de France’ competition, the city boasts 8.5 hectares of flower-filled areas and also features a particularly rich heritage of trees, which has enabled it to win the national tree award.
Presenting itself as an environmentally conscious city, Amiens has made the connection between the city and nature one of the key drivers of its regional development project. It has drawn up a cleanliness plan to raise awareness among all residents about best practices and shared responsibilities. Amiens Métropole continues to promote waste sorting and is going further by taking up the ‘Zero Waste, Zero Wasteful Territory’ challenge launched by the Ministry for Ecological and Solidarity Transition.
