ABOUT THE TOWN OF BOULOGNE-SUR-MER

The town of Boulogne-sur-Mer is home to numerous talented photographers, and there are many opportunities to capture beautiful images there.

Boulogne-sur-Mer is a French commune and sub-prefecture of the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region. Its inhabitants are known as the Boulonnais.

With 40,664 inhabitants within the city limits according to the latest census in 2018, the town is the third largest in the department in terms of population, behind Calais and Arras (which was second until 2016), and ranks first in terms of population density. Boulogne-sur-Mer is also the centre of an urban area with a population of around 132,000, making it the 61st most populous urban area in the country.

Situated on the shores of the English Channel opposite the English coast, The town is known as France’s leading fishing port, as a former major cross-channel link with England (a role now filled by Calais) and for its 2,000 years of turbulent history, marked by the conquests of Julius Caesar and Napoleon I.

In addition to its characteristic narrow streets and distinctive atmosphere, Boulogne-sur-Mer offers numerous green spaces and attractive promenades. The town provides an ideal setting for photographers and for creating unique photo reports that showcase your company, organisation or institution.

Boulogne-sur-Mer has 70 hectares of green and natural spaces, amounting to 15.6 m² per inhabitant. These spaces are there for the community to enjoy together.

The cloister garden is the iconic symbol of the building that now houses the Annonciades Library, where the heritage collections of the Quadrant – the Boulogne-sur-Mer library network – are preserved. Founded in the early 13th century by the town council, the hospital, or Sainte-Catherine hostel, took in the sick, the poor, the elderly and pilgrims to Notre-Dame. In the 17th century, the Franciscan nuns who ran the establishment joined the contemplative Order of the Annunciation and gave up their hospital duties to live a cloistered life. Dedicated to devotion to the Virgin Mary and, in particular, to the mystery of the Annunciation, this order enjoyed great success in the city of the Virgin of the Sea and very quickly grew to around fifty members. This was a period of great prosperity for the monastery, which soon began its reconstruction. In 1792, the religious community was expelled. Confiscated as national property, the convent then served as a prison, a military depot, a hospital and an ammunition store. After the cathedral was destroyed, however, the chapel regained its religious purpose as the parish church from 1803 to 1868, when it was transferred to the rebuilt Notre-Dame. At the same time, the Annonciade Sisters regained possession of the premises and devoted themselves to the education of young boarders. In 1904, following the laws on secularism, which stripped religious congregations of their teaching role, the sisters left Boulogne for good, relocating to England. The buildings then housed a secular youth centre. Severely damaged by the war, they narrowly escaped demolition, which had been planned to make way for a new art school. Following major damage in the war, the buildings narrowly avoided demolition to make way for a new school of arts. Eventually, the former convent was renovated to house the Municipal Library, which opened in 1975. The premises retain the convent’s general layout: they are arranged around the reconstructed cloister, which has been glazed in for the past fifteen years or so to host temporary exhibitions.
