ABOUT THE TOWN OF COMPIÈGNE

The town of Compiègne is home to numerous talented photographers, and there are many opportunities to capture beautiful images there.

Compiègne is a French commune in the Oise department, where it serves as a sub-prefecture, within the Hauts-de-France region. The commune lies north-east of Paris and is often nicknamed ‘the Imperial City’ because of its history, which is closely linked to the Second Empire.
In terms of area, it is the largest municipality in the department, and in terms of population, the second largest. It is the third-largest urban area in the department of Oise, with just under 100,000 inhabitants.

In addition to its many picturesque narrow streets and distinctive atmosphere, Compiègne offers numerous green spaces and attractive walks. The city provides an ideal setting for photographers and for creating unique photo reports that showcase your company, organisation or institution.

Compiègne has managed to preserve numerous green spaces at the heart of the town. Make the most of the parks and gardens to recharge your batteries without leaving the town.

Just a stone’s throw from the Vivenel Museum and the former Hôtel de Songeons-Bicquelley, Songeons Park is an oasis of greenery in the city centre and still features a few arcades from the cloister of the former Jacobin convent. During the warmer months, visitors can explore the innovative ‘vis et versa’ garden and relax in the shade while enjoying a fine view of the River Oise.

Set in two hectares of greenery dotted with tall trees, Bayser Park offers a wide range of activities for children: cycling, ball games and even balance exercises on a fitness trail. The park hosts the ‘Compiègne Plage’ event every summer.

The Allée des Beaux-Monts, 5 kilometres long and approximately 60 metres wide, links the forest to the Château de Compiègne. Created in 1810 and completed in 1853 on the orders of Napoleon III, the avenue was intended to replicate the perspective of Schönbrunn near Vienna, the summer palace of the Austro-Hungarian dynasty to which Marie Louise, the Emperor’s wife, belonged. The avenue ends at a hillock offering a fine view of the forest and the imperial palace in the background.
