ABOUT THE TOWN OF DOUAI

The town of Douai is home to numerous talented photographers, and there are many opportunities to capture beautiful images there.

Douai is a French commune in the Nord department of the Hauts-de-France region, specifically in the south of Romanic Flanders.
Douai is part of the Douaisis Urban Community, which comprises 35 municipalities and had a population of 155,000 in 2018. The town also lies within the Douai-Lens urban area, the fifteenth largest in France, comprising 103 municipalities. Finally, together with Lille and the towns of the former Nord-Pas-de-Calais coalfield, it forms a metropolitan area of nearly 3.8 million inhabitants, known as the ‘Lille metropolitan area’.
The inhabitants of Douai are known as Douaisiens. The region is called the Douaisis.

The first recorded mention of Douai dates back to 930, when it was referred to as Duacum. However, an urban settlement had already existed since the Merovingian period, in the 7th century, on a clay hill flanked by two streams (now the Saint-Amé district).

First proto-urban development (late 9th – mid-10th centuries)
The historic centre of the city is densely packed with wooden buildings.
In the 10th century, following the break-up of the Carolingian Empire, the Count of Flanders built his residence and diverted a river, making the Scarpe navigable from that site.

In addition to its many picturesque narrow streets and distinctive atmosphere, Douai offers numerous green spaces and pleasant walks. The town provides an ideal setting for photographers and for creating unique photo reports that showcase your company, organisation or institution.

This marked the founding of the town and the start of its economic growth (with the establishment of numerous mills). The castrum Duacum, which encompasses the old lord’s tower and the new count’s tower, was first enclosed by a wall at the end of the 10th century.

With the waterways linking the city to the Flemish towns, a new district emerged to the north on the left bank of the Scarpe (now known as the Petite-Place). It featured breweries, taverns and the ‘rivage’, a quay for the loading and unloading of goods.

Douai is a multifaceted town, well suited to photography.

• Seraing, in Belgium, on the outskirts of Liège, since 1964.
• Recklinghausen, in Germany, in the Ruhr region (state of North Rhine-Westphalia), since 1965.
• Harrow, England, in the northern suburbs of London, since 1979.
• Kenosha, in the US state of Wisconsin (on the shores of Lake Michigan, 90 km from Chicago), since 1982.
• Dédougou, in Burkina Faso (Mouhoun province) since 2003.
• Pulawy, Poland, since May 2004. The twinning arrangement was suspended following homophobic remarks made in February 2020.
