ABOUT THE CITY OF LILLE

The city of Lille is home to numerous talented photographers, and it offers many opportunities for striking imagery.

Lille is a city in northern France, the prefecture of the Nord department and the regional capital of the Hauts-de-France region.
With a population of over 233,000, Lille is the tenth most populous municipality in France and the principal municipality of the Lille European Metropolis, which comprises 94 other municipalities, including Roubaix, Tourcoing and Villeneuve-d’Ascq, and has a population of nearly 1.2 million.

In the French-speaking part of the country, Lille’s urban area and its 100,000 inhabitants make it the fourth-largest conurbation in France, behind Paris, Lyon and Marseille.
More broadly, it forms part of a vast conurbation comprising the Belgian towns of Mouscron, Kortrijk, Tournai and Menin, which in January 2008 gave rise to the Lille-Kortrijk-Tournai Eurometropolis, the first European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC), with a total population of over 2.1 million. It also exerts significant influence over a territory of more than 3.8 million inhabitants known as the ‘Lille metropolitan area’, which is highly urbanised and densely populated, comprising in particular the former mining region of Nord-Pas-de-Calais and the urban areas of Arras and Cambrai.

In addition to its many picturesque alleyways and distinctive atmosphere, Lille offers numerous green spaces and pleasant walks. The city provides an ideal setting for photographers and for creating unique photo reports that showcase your company, organisation or institution.

• The Promenade des remparts is an 18-kilometre route that runs along or near the site of the city’s old ramparts, most of which have now disappeared.
• The Esplanade façade serves as a green buffer between the city and Citadel Park. Visitors can follow a short section of the ramparts walk, especially during the first days of fine weather, when crocuses and daffodils bloom to signal spring.
• The banks of the Bois-Blancs stretch for two kilometres (about a half-hour’s stroll at a leisurely pace). Come and explore one of the city’s greenest neighbourhoods, bordered by the water…
  Remarkable heritage: continue your walk to the Quai de l’Ouest, where the barge moorings are located; there you will find a fig tree, which was designated a ‘remarkable tree’ in the 2002 national competition.
