ABOUT THE TOWN OF WATTRELOS

The town of Wattrelos is home to numerous skilled photographers, and there are many opportunities to capture striking images there.

Wattrelos is a French commune with a population of around 41,000, situated in the Nord department, in the Hauts-de-France region.

A town of festivals and traditions, it is home to a museum of folk arts and traditions which welcomes over 10,000 visitors a year. It also organises one of the region’s largest carnivals each year, as well as the ‘Fête des Berlouffes’, one of France’s largest car boot sales, which attracts several hundred thousand bargain hunters and onlookers every second Sunday in September (the term ‘berlouffes’ means ‘old clothes’ in the local dialect). Wattrelos has, in fact, been dubbed the ‘City of Berlouffes’ by the local press.

A green town, with its 40-hectare urban park right in the town centre, and a young town, Wattrelos can also count on a very dense and active network of community organisations. Leisure, sport and culture – but above all, solidarity and a sense of community – are part of the Wattrelos way of life.

Situated on the border (13 kilometres from the Belgian border), Wattrelos embraced Europe and town twinning from an early stage, forging friendships with six towns across Europe.

Its inhabitants are known as Wattrelosiens and are nicknamed ‘Les coupés en deux’ (‘Les copés in deux’ in the Ch’ti dialect).

In addition to its many picturesque narrow streets and distinctive atmosphere, Wattrelos offers numerous green spaces and attractive walks. The town provides a suitable setting for photographers and for creating distinctive photo reports that showcase your company, organisation or institution.

• The esplanade in the renovated Beaulieu district features 460 trees, 12,600 shrubs and 5,600 m² of lawn.

• The former Kuhlmann brownfield site has, through decontamination and containment work, been transformed into a natural space.

• The municipal greenhouses, with their 1,500 m² of tunnel greenhouses, produce 5,000 m² of shrub nursery stock, 50,000 annual plants from seed, 15,000 annual plants from cuttings, 1,200 herbaceous plants from cuttings and 3,000 plants for mixed planting each year.

• Flowers: 4,500 m² of flowerbeds, 150 wooden planters, 550 hanging baskets of various kinds.
